Biographical Information[edit]

Dwight "Del" Wertz was a professional football player who also dabbled in baseball. Wertz played football at Case Western Reserve University (at the time, he attended Western Reserve before it merged with Case) along with some other future pro football players. In 1912-1916 he played pro football for several different Ohio-based teams, including in the Ohio League, a predecessor of the NFL.

Wertz also did some baseball, appearing in three major league games in the Federal League with the Buffalo Buffeds in 1914 and in the minors in 1914 and 1915. Most of his games in the minors were with the 1915 Fort William Canadians, for whom he played 127 games. With regard to his time in the majors, he never got a plate appearance, playing solely in the outfield and as a pinch-runner.

He appeared in his final big league game on May 26, 1914 - exactly 44 years before his death in 1958. Following his death, he was interred at City Cemetery in South Bend, IN.
