Biographical Information[edit]

David Weathers was the 20th pitcher in MLB history to appear in 900 games. Five of the pitchers to top 900 before him had reached the Hall of Fame and some of the others on the list were strong candidates upon retirement, unlike Weathers. In total, he appeared in 964 games over 19 seasons.

He first came to the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991, but also played for 8 other teams over the course of his career. He was a starting pitcher during his time with the Florida Marlins, which lasted from 1993 to 1996, but otherwise was almost exclusively a reliever. He did not pick up his first save until 1999, as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, then late in his career, with the Cincinnati Reds from 2005 to 2007, he recorded 60 saves over a three-year period, including a career-high 33 in 2007. These account for the vast majority of his 75 saves overall. For the remainder of his career, he was a relatively faceless middle reliever, pitching in many games and often for more than one inning, but away from the spotlight. He finished with an ERA of 4.25 in 1376 1/3 innings, and a record of 73-88.

He only appeared in the postseason one year, in 1996, after the New York Yankees had acquired him from the Marlins at the trading deadline. He did well that year, allowing just one run in 11 innings spread out over 7 outings and receiving credit for 2 wins. The Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves in the World Series that year.

His son Ryan Weathers was selected 7th overall in the 2018 amateur draft and reached the majors in 2020.
