Biographical Information[edit]

Dave Thies was from Minneapolis, MN. Before turning pro, Thies was an outstanding pitcher with Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Between 1956 and 1959, Thies had a 19-10 record and an unbelievable 0.99 ERA ... a record at the time and still second all-time in school history. He still owns the school record for strikeouts per 9 innings pitched with 13.56 (110 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched).

Thies was an up-and-coming star in the Kansas City Athletics organization before an arm injury shortened his career. In his third year of professional ball, he won 15 games for the 1961 Hawaii Islanders in the Pacific Coast League. This was the Islanders' first year of organized ball and was at the Triple-A level, one step below major league ball. He did make it to the major leagues for 9 games with the Athletics in 1963, going 0-1, 4.62.
