Biographical Information[edit]

During his brief major league career, much was made of the fact that pitcher Dave Pagan grew up in the small town of Snowden, SK - population 75. His telephone number was simply "8" in those days before automatic dialing had reached small towns.

he has the distinction of pitching the first shutout in the history of the Seattle Mariners, against the Oakland Atletics on May 19, 1977. He had been selected from the Baltimore Orioles in the expansion draft before that season, and his shutout was the only one thrown by a Mariners' pitcher in their inaugural season. The New York Yankees had originally signed him out of Bellevue Community College in 1970 and he had made his major league debut with them in 1973, being promoted straight from AA. He struggled with a sore arm for much of his career, and was considered very raw, never having had the chance to play much baseball at a high level when growing up - for obvious reasons.

After baseball, he returned to Saskatchewan, settling down in Nipawin, SK, his birthplace and the only town of any size near Snowden, where he worked in a lumber yard.
