Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Dave Matranga was selected by the Houston Astros in the 6th round of the 1998 amateur draft. His first major league at bat came as a pinch hitter for the Astros on June 27, 2003 versus the Texas Rangers. Matranga's at bat resulted in a solo home run off Joaquin Benoit to tie the score, a game eventually lost by the Astros. The homer would be the only base hit of his major-league career. Matranga got into six total games with the Astros in 2003, logging his only other time in the majors via a single game for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005. Matranga returned to the minors, bouncing around several organizations as an infielder at the Triple-A level. He saw his last pro ball action with the 2009 New Orleans Zephyrs.

Matranga was the US second baseman in the 1995 World Junior Championship, hitting .206 with 6 runs and 6 RBI as the worst starting position player for the Gold Medal winners. Matranga also played on Team USA while attending Pepperdine University. He was 1 for 6 with a double as a backup 2B to Brian Oliver in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup.
