Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Dave Malpeso was drafted three times.

Initially, the Chicago White Sox took him in the 2nd round of the 1980 January Draft-Regular Phase. Then the Minnesota Twins drafted him in the 3rd round of the 1980 June Draft-Secondary Phase. He signed after the Boston Red Sox took him 22nd overall in the 1981 January Draft-Secondary Phase.

He began his career by hitting .292/.349/.500 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 67 games for the Elmira Pioneers. In 1982, he slugged 29 home runs with 91 RBI for the Winston-Salem Red Sox, batting .317/.353/.574 in 116 games and was named the Red Sox's #7 prospect going into 1983 by Baseball America. He never reached such levels of success. He wrapped up US his career hitting 9, 9 and 4 home runs, respectively, over the next three seasons, the latter two of which were spent at Triple A.

In five seasons, Malpeso hit .281/.335/.449 with 63 home runs and 294 RBI in 487 games. After his minor league career ended, he played in Italy in 1986-1987, hitting .394/.460/.810 with 41 HR, 136 RBI and 98 R in 95 games thanks to the aluminum bats then in use. He led Serie A1 with 24 homers in 1986 and helped Rimini win the 1987 Italian Series.
