Biographical Information[edit]

Darién Núñez was a pitcher in the Cuban Serie Nacional before defecting and playing in Major League Baseball.

In the 2009 World Youth Championship, he beat Japan with a complete game, 5-2. In the Gold Medal game, the lefty was beating the US, 5-2, after six innings, but Cuba allowed three unearned runs in the 7th and he left with a no-decision; Cuba wound up losing, 7-6. In the 2010 World Junior Championship, he had a 1-1, 1.23 record with 16 whiffs in 14 2/3 IP. He got the win in relief against the Czech Republic, allowed 3 unearned runs in 4 2/3 IP in a no-decision versus South Korea (Cuba lost) and allowed two runs in eight, fanning eight, in a tough 2-1 loss to Australia. A double by Josh Matavesi provided all the damage. Núñez tied for 5th in the event in Ks.

In the 2011-2012, he debuted in the Serie Nacional with Las Tunas. He went 5-5 with two saves and a 3.80 ERA; he allowed only a .228 average but walked 61 and threw 10 wild pitches in 87 2/3 IP. He was 9th in the league in walks and tied for 7th in wild pitches. In the 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week, Darién allowed one run in 4 1/3 IP, getting a no-decision in a Cuban win over Japan and a save in a win over the US.

Núñez was put on Cuba's preliminary roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

He signed his first contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 16, 2018 and reached the majors with them a little over three years later, on July 9, 2021.
