Daan Cornelissen was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 2009. Scouted by Martin Nijhoff, he signed a 7-year deal. In 2008, he had played for the farm team of DOOR Neptunus. He hit .191 in the 2009 Australian Summer League with 70 strikeouts in 152 AB. He made his pro debut in 2010 with the GCL Pirates on June 21, hitting 9th and playing DH. He went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, a walk and a run.
