Coker was the first member of his family to go to college. [1] He then pitched for Eastern Air; the Eastern Air team was picked to represent the US in the 1942 Amateur World Series rather than a team of amateurs assembled from around the country. [2] He signed with the Atlanta Crackers in 1943. [3]
He pitched six games for the Crackers before being called up to the US Air Corps. [4] He returned to the minors in 1946, going 12-11 with a 5.17 ERA for the Burlington Bees. He improved to 10-5, 3.53 with the 1947 Gainesville G-Men. He was 13-11 with a 3.78 ERA for the '48 G-Men to finish his pro career at 35-27. He later was a sales executive for Pillsbury. [5]
