Cory Schwartz

Cory Schwartz is a baseball researcher born in 1969. Working for Major League Baseball Advanced Media since 2001, he is responsible for overseeing the team responsible for live data capture and official statistics in all of organized baseball, including the major leagues, Minor League Baseball and the winter leagues.

His key contribution has been the development of the PITCHf/x data system, a database that tracks the movement of every pitch thrown in the leagues covered, including speed, amount and direction of break, and location. What is remarkable is that this database was created to be publicly accessible in order to allow researchers, scouts and others to use the data generated in innovative ways. It has as a result served as a boon for innovative research into pitching. He is now working on a system to track all other movement on the field, including positioning of fielders and the path of batted balls, a data base that will also be freely available and is likely to have revolutionary implications for the evaluation of fielding.

Schwartz had previously worked in media relations for the New York Yankees in 1992 and 1993, and for the National Basketball Association's internet site from 1994 to 1999. In 2014, he was honored with the Henry Chadwick Award.
