Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Corey Spencer pitched in the Boston Red Sox system from 1999 to 2002, peaking briefly at Triple-A in his final campaign. Signed as an undrafted free agent, he began his career with a 3.10 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings between two clubs in 1999. With the Augusta GreenJackets in 2000, he was 8-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 53 games, striking out 119 in 92 2/3 innings. He tied Travis Fleming for second in the South Atlantic League in appearances, behind B.J. Leach's 60. Though his ERA rose to 4.52 with the Trenton Thunder in 2001, he managed 20 saves and had 82 Ks in 77 2/3 innings. He reached Triple-A for the only time in 2002, posting a 5.81 ERA in 15 games for the Pawtucket Red Sox; he had a 5.67 ERA on the year as a whole.

Overall, Spencer went 15-11 with 31 saves and a 3.98 ERA in 181 games over four seasons. In 289 2/3 innings, he allowed 310 hits and 117 walks (1.474 WHIP), while striking out 324 batters.
