Unlike Counsell, Mee had a short career in pro ball. Undrafted, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and went 3 for 24 with four walks for the Yakima Bears. He returned to Notre Dame as a volunteer assistant coach in 1993, was an assistant at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1994 and was an assistant at Notre Dame from 1995-1999. His next stop was Michigan State University, where he was assistant coach from 2000-2003.
In 2004, Mee was hired as the head coach of the University of Toledo. He went 20-34 his first year, fell to 15 wins in 2005, then was 26-27 in 2006 and 26-28 in 2007. With an injury-riddled team, Toledo went only 18-31 in 2008. In '09, they rebounded to 24-30, then were 34-22 in 2010, tying for the second-most wins in school history. He was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year.
