Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Cooper Kinney was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in Competitive Balance Round A in the 2021 amateur draft, with the 34th overall pick, out of a high school in Chattanooga, TN, where his father was the baseball coach. He gave up a commitment to go to the University of North Carolina in order to sign with the Rays for a bonus of $2.1 million.
He played 11 games with the FCL Rays in 2021, hitting .286, before missing the entire 2022 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He returned in 2023 to play a full season with the Charleston RiverDogs of the Carolina League. In 121 games, he hit .274/.341/.393, with 10 homers and 61 RBIs. He was named a Carolina League postseason All-Star.
