Biographical Information[edit]

Relief pitcher Cody Winiarski began his professional career in 2011. He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 48th round of the 2007 amateur draft, in the same round as infielder Jake Elmore, but he opted not to sign. He was then taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 36th round of the 2011 amateur draft and inked a deal. The scout was Andrew Pinter.

In 20 innings with the Great Falls Voyagers in 2011, Winiarski allowed just four walks while striking out 29 batters. His career was put on hold in 2012 when he underwent thoracic spine surgery, missing the campaign. Returning in 2013, Winiarski had a 2.43 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 13 saves in 66 2/3 innings between the Winston-Salem Dash and Birmingham Barons. Though he was a Southern League All-Star in 2014, he posted an 8.34 ERA in 34 games for Birmingham that year, however he had 54 strikeouts in 45 1/3 frames. Between Winston-Salem and Birmingham in 2015, Winiarski had a 1.42 ERA and again averaged more than a whiff per inning. He underwent Tommy John surgery in July and began 2016 on the disabled list.
