Biographical Information[edit]

Kang-Chih Liao pitched in the CPBL and for the Taiwanese national team.

Liao represented Taiwan in the 1983 World Junior Championship, 1988 Haarlemse Honkbalweek, 1990 Goodwill Games and 1991 Intercontinental Cup. In the 1991 Cup, he allowed two runs in eight innings. The Jungo Bears signed Liao when the team was founded in 1993. Liao was a relief pitcher in his rookie year, and recorded a 2.81 ERA in 27 games. He only pitched 7 games in 1994. The Bears decided to moved Liao into the rotation, and Liao didn't disappoint them. He was 10-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts, very outstanding stats for a local starter. Liao won the CPBL Most Improved Player Award in this year. However, the Taichung native mysteriously forgot how to retire batters in 1996. His ERA rose to 7.19, and he led the league in losses and homers allowed. He even set the record for most consecutive losses without a win to open the season with nine losses. Liao was moved back to the bullpen in the 1997. He bounced back a little, had a 4.21 ERA and pitched 22 games in that year. Liao missed all of the 1998 season due to injuries, and he jumped to the TML in 1999. Liao joined the Taichung Agan, but he still struggled. He was released after pitching 56 1/3 innings with a 6.71 ERA at the end of the 2000 TML.

After retiring, Liao served as pitching coach for the Sinon Bulls from 2001 to 2004, and transferred to the La New Bears. He was their pitching coach in the minors from 2005 to 2006 and made it to the majors from 2005 to 2011. Liao came back to the Bears' minors in 2011 and 2012, then became a coach for the National Taiwan University of Sport. The CTBC Brothers signed Liao and he worked as pitching coach from 2015 to 2016. He is a scout for the Fubon Guardians now (2023).

Overall, Liao was 14-27 with a 5.06 ERA and pitched 451 2/3 innings in eight seasons in the CPBL and TML.
