Biographical Information[edit]
Chuck Wolfe posted a 3.72 ERA in his three games with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1923. He might have kept a job except for allowing 8 walks in 9 2/3 innings of work.
Wolfe was born in Wolfsburg, PA, a hundred miles east of Pittsburgh, PA. He came to the Athletics at age 26 without having pitched an inning in the minors, so possibly he was a semi-pro pitcher beforehand. After his time in the majors, he was in the minors from 1924 to 1929, winning in double figures four times. He was 15-10 for the Manchester Blue Sox in both 1926 and in 1927.
As a major league hitter, Chuck went 1-for-3. As a pitcher, he hurled well in two outings against the Cleveland Indians, but gave up three runs in four innings against the Detroit Tigers. However, the one hit he got as a major leaguer was against the Tigers that day.
