Cherokee Nation Male Seminary

From BR Bullpen

The Cherokee Nation Male Seminary was established in 1846 and began its work in 1851 in order to provide a modern education to young men of the Cherokee Indian nation; a parallel institution for women was also created at the time. Located in Tahlequah, OK, it was one of the first schools to exist west of the Mississippi River. It opened to other students from other Indian tribes after the Civil War, but closed down in 1910, after efforts by the United States government to shut down tribal institutions as part of a policy of assimilation.
