Biographical Information[edit]

"So far he has faced every one of our skyrockets, and they are anxious to have him catch them the next time they perform. And a great deal of his best work has been done with very sore hands. Reip never kicks, however, and is by long odds the favorite of the team with the public." - Sporting Life's Cleveland correspondent, May 25, 1887

Charlie Reipschlager played his entire major league career in the 19th Century American Association. Not a strong hitter, he earned his keep as a catcher at a time when catchers took a beating from pitched balls.

His best year with the bat was 1885, when he hit .243 on a team which hit .247. However, his OBP and SLG were farther below the team averages than was his batting average.

His picture can be found here: 1882 Metropolitans

"Everybody has no doubt heard of 'Reip', the old Metropolitan player. At one time, as a catcher, he had few, if any, superiors, and I think he can still demonstrate that he can hold any of the swift pitchers of the present time." - Sporting Life's Jersey City correspondent, Feb. 15, 1888
