Biographical Information[edit]
Charlie Reilly moved around a lot in his five major league seasons. He played for six teams and appeared at seven different positions.
Charlie was born in 1856 in Providence, RI, a town in which he eventually played major league ball. He was one of the first five players born in Rhode Island to come to the big leagues.
After playing some in the minors in 1877-78, he came to the majors with the 1879 Troy Trojans, a team which also featured the 21-year-old first baseman Dan Brouthers. Charlie was the regular catcher, and his .229 batting average wasn't much below the team average of .237 although he didn't have much power.
As the years progressed he played less. He had 62 games in 1879, 30 in 1880, 21 in 1881 and 3 in 1882. He came back in 1884 for 3 more.
In 1885 he again played in the minors, with New Britain.
