Biographical Information[edit]
"Osterhout has undoubtedly spoiled more safe hits than any player in the right field in any team." - Sporting Life, July 22, 1885, about Charlie Osterhout's play for the minor league Syracuse team
Charlie Osterhout, who was born and died in Syracuse, NY, appeared in two games for the 1879 Syracuse Stars. It was the only year that Syracuse had an entry in the National League.
He caught for Akron in 1880. The book A Fine-Looking Lot of Ball-Tossers: The Remarkable Akrons indicates that when Osterhout caught in an exhibition game in 1891, he "hadn't played in two years", indicating that he must have had a long playing career.
