Biographical Information

Charlie Mead is one of the few major league baseball players from Alberta, Canada. He was born in the small town of Vermilion, east of Edmonton, about halfway up the province.

Mead was a wartime player for the New York Giants from 1943 to 1945, starting out pretty well in 1943. A right fielder, he hit .274 on a team which hit .247. Mel Ott, the starting right fielder, hit only .234 but was far and away the top home run hitter on the team.

Mead hit .179 in 1944, and then in limited play in 1945 (11 games), came back to hit .270, still as a backup to Ott.

He played 15 seasons in the minors, mostly in Canada - he spent six seasons with the Vancouver Capilanos of the Western International League from 1946 to 1951, but also spending parts of three seasons with Jersey City. He was a power hitter in the minors, hitting 19 or more homers in six different seasons, with a high of 31 in 1953, although he only hit three long balls in his 87 major league games.
