Biographical Information[edit]

Charles McCafferty was an umpire in the American Association when he was recruited by the National League to umpire some games, five in 1921 and three in 1923. The two major leagues worked with a minimal umpiring staff in those days, with no extra umpire around to allow any of the regulars to take a rest or holiday if required. There was presumably an injury that caused the NL to turn to the minor league ranks to fill a gap those two years. All of his appearances were as a base umpire at a time when the leagues used only two umpires.

He had pitched in the minors from 1901-1918, going 20-20 for the 1905 Evansville River Rats. He managed Missoula for part of 1911 and the Butte Miners for part of 1912.
