Biographical Information[edit]

Charles Gipson, Sr. is the father of Charles Gipson. He was drafted out of high school by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of the 1971 Amateur Draft (56 rounds earlier than his son was picked). The outfielder/first baseman spent 1971 and 1972 with the short season A Coos Bay-North Bend A's where he hit a combined .239/.339/.341 (.230/.295/.356 in 30 G in 1971, .243/.356/.335 in 64 G in 1972, 10 SB, 7 CS). He didn't play pro ball again until 1977 at age 24. Having converted to pitching, he appeared in nine games for the A Wisconsin Rapids Twins. He started four games and completed two of them, but had an 0-5 record and an ERA of 6.00. In 33 innings pitched, he walked 18 and surrendered six home runs.
