Biographical Information

Mississippi native Cecil Bolton spent seven active seasons in professional baseball from 1927 to 1936. He appeared in the Major Leagues late in one season, with the 1928 Cleveland Indians. He played first base, appearing in four games during his ten day run, and produced two hits, both triples, in thirteen at-bats.

Bolton spent most of his pro baseball career in the minor leagues patrolling first base. During his seven minor league seasons, his best numbers came in 1934 with the Greenville Buckshots of the Class C East Dixie League when he hit .324 with 19 home runs. His totals show he appeared in 813 games with 860 hits, including 68 home runs, for a minor league career batting average of .291. Bolton was also on the mound in five of his seven minor league years and had a 15-15 record, pitching 313 innings in 67 appearances. He was an eight game winner, but had nine losses for the Terre Haute Tots of the Three-I League in 1927. George was also 5-2 for the Greenville Buckshots, as a player-manager, for part of the season in 1935.

Bolton served in Italy for the United States Army during World War II. After baseball he became a director for Wells Funeral Home. Bolton died August 25, 1993, at the Manhattan Health Care Center in Jackson, MS at the age of 89. He is interred at Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, MS.
