I like proposal 1, with a few small changes: 1) for Canadian cities, under "Category" add CAN before the provincial two-letter code, so all the Canadian cities will be listed together, and not interspersed among the states: [[Category:Places|CAN,QC,Montreal]]
2) for Mexico and Japan, I would suggest we write the city before the state/prefecture, in order for the cities to all come out in alphabetical order, and not in order of state/prefecture. I am not sure where jJanese wards would fall in this structure, however...--Philippe 10:21, 28 Mar 2006 (EST)
Philippe, not including change 1 was a oversight on my part, since the Canadian (thank you spell check) cities had already been completed. (Fixed. --MichaelEng 21:28, 28 Mar 2006 (EST)) Regarding Mexico/Japan, what would be some benefits each system. A short list for both is below. --MichaelEng 21:26, 28 Mar 2006 (EST) --MichaelEng 21:28, 28 Mar 2006 (EST)
- Division, Place: groups places by geography; uniform system for all places with two sub-national levels; easier to find groups of places by searching
- Place, Division: groups places alphabetically; easier to find specific places, especially for people unfamiliar with the nation, via category list
Reason 2 is why I think we should go with the Place, Division order. In both countries, the number of places is fairly limited, meaning there's only a handful of cities under each division. Not at all like the typical American state, under which some 200 cities are listed. The problem is if someone is looking for a specific city (say Kobe, or Monterrey). In the vast majority of cases, that someone will have no idea under which state or prefecture to look, and will have to go through the who list to see if it is included.--Philippe 10:11, 29 Mar 2006 (EST)
We can set up redirects in those places. - --Mischa 10:16, 29 Mar 2006 (EST)
