Category talk:Famous Firsts
I just thought this might be a useful category.--Admin 07:33, 24 Sep 2005 (EDT)
There are many possibilities: 1st dh, 1st black player, 1st AL Game, 1st NL game, 1st perfect game, 1st guy with 3,000 hits, 1st night game.....--Pti 10:33, 24 Sep 2005 (EDT)
Should is Nathaniel Clifton (first African-American in the NBA) and Danny Litwhiler (first outfielder with over 150 games and 0 errors) be in this category? The first seems unrelated to baseball and the second doesn't seem to be very notable. --MichaelEng 12:08, 9 Apr 2006 (EDT)
The latter does not seem notable to me either. The former is within the definition of "Players, teams, leagues and events that were the first of their kind" and meets the famous part. If someone who has a bio here were to become the first female president or something, I would put them under Famous Firsts even if it's not baseball-related. What do others think? - --Mischa 12:53, 9 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Famous Firsts implies (at least in my mind) Famous Baseball Firsts. Maybe that's just me though --Just me 10:05, 10 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Litwhiler's achievement may not seem like much now, but at the time it was a big deal - as in radio announcers like Harry Caray included the fact every time theman came up to bat, as if it were part of his name. --Ron 10:49, 10 Apr 2006 (EDT)
I removed the category from Clifton. - --Mischa 11:03, 10 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Should the first MLB player from each country be included? --MichaelEng 12:47, 17 Apr 2006 (EDT)
I'd say that it should probably be only the first MLB player from each country that wasn't represented at the beginning of MLB play. So you would include the first Cuban and Dominican players, for instance, but not the first American, English, or Irish player (if you could figure out who to credit). --Roger 13:38, 17 Apr 2006 (EDT)
How about Canadian? --Ron 15:31, 17 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Here's a list of the first MLB players from each country: User:MichaelEng/FirstPlayers. I am going to add famous first for any country with more than two players and to turn the above page like First MLB Player by Country or something like that. Excluded are the United States, England and Ireland which had more than 2 players in 1871, Germany which had 2 players in 1872, and West Germany. --MichaelEng 00:36, 19 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Perhaps the "1"'s could go into a new category of "onlies".--Ron 06:26, 19 Apr 2006 (EDT)
That assumes they'd stay "onlies" --Just me 10:25, 19 Apr 2006 (EDT)
Not at all. The Bullpen is a dynamic place. When a second player from a given country starts playing, you can shift the "only" to "first". --Roger 20:35, 19 Apr 2006 (EDT)

The columns line up pretty well if you click on the "edit button" --Ron 06:58, 20 Apr 2006 (EDT)
There was the suggestion to move this category to "Notable firsts" - what do people think? Some of these firsts weren't famous but they were historic, which is what we're aiming for I think. - --Mischa 20:08, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
Topped 200 entries. - --Mischa 12:23, 14 August 2012 (EDT)
