Biographical Information[edit]

Cuban-born Carlos Paula was the first black player for the Washington Senators when he made his debut for them late in the 1954 season. In 1955 as a rookie, he hit .299 with 7 triples, but committed 10 errors in the outfield (mostly right field).

The book Trading with the Enemy: A Yankee Travels Through Castro's Cuba indicates that Paula had hit .314 in three previous seasons in the minors. The author also mentions a rumor that Paula later was shot to death in Cuba by a firing squad, but that turns out not to be true.
