Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Carl Weilman was the first batter to strike out six times in a game - an he did it in a relief outing too! On July 25, 1913, he came on in relief in the 1st inning for the St. Louis Browns against the Washington Senators. The great Walter Johnson also entered the game as a relief pitcher, in the 4th, and the two were matched in a pitchers' duel until the game was called due to darkness after 15 innings. Johnson set a record for relief pitchers with 15 Ks in that game. The next batter to strike out that many times in a game was Don Hoak, in a 17-inning game in 1956.
He died at the age of 34 after a bout with the flu.
