Biographical Information

Carl Angelo had a brief pro career then a long and successful amateur one.

Angelo was 2-2 for the 1954 Dubuque Packers, also going 5 for 12 at the plate; he was also with the Madisonville Miners (0-1 in 3 G) that summer. He then was a long-time player and later coach for the Grand Rapids Sullivans, one of the top amateur teams in the country for decades; he also ran a restaurant across the street from the team's park. He was 353-69 in his amateur career and threw 13 no-hitters, earning entry into ten Halls of Fame. He participated in the Haarlem Baseball Week nine times as a player (starting in 1963 and concluding in 1996 with 1/3 of an inning at age 64, the oldest player in the event's history) and coached in them for four others.

He was much-loved by the Dutch fans for his comedic antics, like going backwards around the bases after hitting a home run, cycling to the mound or wearing a kilt. The Carl Angelo Award for the event's most popular player was named for him. He once played the national anthems of three of the competing nations on his trumpet.
