Laurium, MI
(Redirected from Calumet, MI)
Laurium is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, about 10 miles north of Houghton, MI. It is now a small village, but in the first decade of the 20th century, when it was generally known as Calumet (although its current name dates back to 1885), it was home to the largest copper mine in the United States, the Calumet & Hecla mine. The population of the surrounding area was around 60,000. The nearby village of Calumet was known as Red Jacket at that time and adopted the name of the former mine in 1929, after it had closed down and most of the population had moved out of the area.
