Biographical Information[edit]

Caleb Clay was a first-round draft pick in 2007.

Primarily an outfielder, Clay became a pitcher as a high school senior. He went 10-1 with a 1.29 ERA and five saves. In 87 innings, he allowed only 39 hits while striking out 112. Baseball America named him a third-team All-American high schooler. The Boston Red Sox took him with the 44th and final pick of the first round in the 2006 amateur draft; the pick was compensation for the loss of Bill Mueller to free agency. Clay signed for a $775,000 bonus.

Clay made his professional debut in 2007 with the Lowell Spinners, allowing one run in five innings on June 20 against the Oneonta Tigers. He only struck out one in the contest.
