Biographical Information[edit]
Byung-kyu Kang pitched 10 years in the Korea Baseball Organization.
Kang went 56-63 with a 4.15 ERA in his career, from 1991-2000. He pitched for the OB Bears (1991-1999) and SK Wyverns (2000). He later became a TV personality.
For the 2008 Olympics, the South Korean Ministry of Culture paid for a bunch of TV personalities to be cheerleaders for the South Korean teams, with Kang as the group's leader. They could not get tickets to enough events, though, and had little positive PR effect. On the other hand, the taxpayer money spent on their accomodations received lots of negative publicity when it came to the public attention.
Due to the controversy, Kang lost a couple of his jobs on TV. While this scandal died down, he was targeted by prosecutors for his role in an Internet gambling scheme. He lost about $300,000 during this scheme and was called before an investigation to see whether he would be penalized legally as well.
