Biographical Information[edit]
Before there was Rick Sutcliffe, there was catcher Butch Sutcliffe, who appeared briefly in the majors for the Boston Bees in 1938. First baseman Elbie Fletcher was the same age, 22.
After being released by the 1939 Hartford Bees, he moved to Drummondville of the outlaw Quebec Provincial League, hiding under the name of "Murphy". When the league joined organized baseball in 1940, he moved to Quebec City (and played under his real name). He served in World War II in 1944 and 1945.
Butch was born and died in Fall River, MA. His contemporary Dick Siebert also was born in Fall River, three years before Butch.
