Biographical Information[edit]
Bud Messenger pitched 25 innings in the major leagues with a record of 2-0 and an ERA of 4.32. His ERA was better than the team ERA of 4.40.
It was possibly the four home runs that he gave up which caused him not to stick with the team. Nobody on the staff gave up more than eight during the season.
During 14 seasons in the minors from 1923-36 he won 178 games, winning in double figures during most years. However, since he was 25 in 1923, he probably had many years of pitching prior to that which have not yet shown up on the SABR minor league database as of April 2009.
He is sometimes called "Andy Messenger". His one son and grandsons are doctors in the Lansing area.
