Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Bryon Gainey played in the minor and independent leagues from 1994 to 2003.

He was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 3rd round of the 1994 amateur draft, two slots ahead of future major leaguer Heath Murray and also ahead of catcher A.J. Pierzynski and infielder Aaron Boone. He played in the Mets system from 1994 to 2000, peaking at Double-A, and in indy ball from 2001 to 2003. Going into 1996, he was named the 10th-best prospect in the Mets system by Baseball America.

He hit 20-plus home runs three times, reaching the 25-home run mark twice (1999 & 2002). Perhaps his best campaign was 1999, when, in addition to his 25 dingers, he hit .237/.298/.466 with 68 runs, 78 RBI and 28 doubles in 137 games for the Binghamton Mets.

Overall, he hit .233/.290/.417 with 158 home runs and 584 RBI in his 10-year career, striking out 1,336 times in 3,699 at-bats.

He died from heart failure on June 10, 2006 at the age of 30.
