After attending Catawba College, Brad Strauss played several seasons in the independent leagues, beginning in 1994. With the Minot Mallards in 1996, he led Prairie League with 27 home runs. The next year, he went to Taiwan, spending the following three seasons in the Taiwan Major League. In 1999, he led the circuit with a .387 batting average. He returned stateside in 2000 and spent eight years in the independent Atlantic League, mostly with the Camden Riversharks.
