Biographical Information[edit]
For an infielder who hit pretty well, Joseph "Chet" Fowler ended up with some pretty unfriendly nicknames. He was called "Boob" and "Gink". With the bat, however, he hit .326 during his 78 games in the big leagues spread over four seasons.
Fowler was born in Texas and was a college football star at Texas Christian University. He played only 42 games in the minors before becoming a major leaguer in 1923 and 1924, although he went down to the minors several times in 1923. In 1925, he hit .400 in five major league at-bats but spent most of the season with the Minneapolis Millers, for whom he hit .314.
After the 1925 season, Chet was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and appeared in a couple of games with them in 1926 before going back to Minneapolis, where he hit over .300. He continued to play in the minors through 1933, usually hitting over .300. Thereafter he was a minor league umpire, possibly as long as 19 years. He then became a salesman for a trucking company.
