Biographical Information

A man named Boland had only one shot with the Brooklyn Atlantics of the National Association in 1875. He appeared in one game, made an error at third base, and did not get a hit. He was one of several players who each got one chance at third base, probably because the regular third baseman, Al Nichols, hit .153 that year. Boland never came back to the majors, while Nichols, in spite of hitting well under .200, came back to hit .179 the following year and also appeared in a few games in 1877 (after which he was involved in a scandal about thrown games). As for the Atlantics, they were 2-42 in 1875 and were not part of the following year's new National League.

Joseph Boland was the secretary of the Clipper baseball club of Brooklyn, NY in 1865, according to the New York Clipper, and died on March 27, 1900. He may be the player with the missing first name, although conclusive proof is missing.
