Biographical Information[edit]
New Hampshire native Bob Whitcher was signed as an amateur free agent by the Boston Braves on August 18, 1945 and spent five seasons in professional baseball from 1945 to 1949. Whitcher was with the Boston Braves from August 20 to September 18. This was his only time in the Major Leagues; Whitcher went 0-2 with a 2.87 ERA while pitching 15 2/3 innings in six games.
Whitcher spent the next four seasons in the minor leagues (1946-1949) and spun a 47-41 record with a 3.54 ERA while pitching 702 innings in 122 games. His best numbers came in 1948 with the Evansville Braves of the class B Three-I League when he had a 14-11 record and a 2.98 ERA in 31 games. Bob had two other double-digit win seasons, in 1947 with a 13-11 number and 13-13 in 1949.
Whitcher died on May 8, 1997 in Akron, OH and was interred at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, OH. Robert Arthur Whitcher was 80 years of age.
