Biographical Information

Outfielder Bob Wakefield was the son of Howard Wakefield and brother of Dick Wakefield. He played in the minor leagues from 1948-1953, almost entirely in the Western League.

Wakefield debuted in 1948 with the Pueblo Dodgers, hitting .298 with 13 HR and 45 RBI. In 1949, he split time between Pueblo (.318, 21 HR, 80 RBI), the Montreal Royals (.257/~.316/.400 in 22 G) and the Hollywood Stars (.239/~.314/.370 in 16 games). Overall, he hit 26 homers and drove in 97 runs in the minors in 1949; it was the only season he played in any league other than the Western. He still finished 4th in the WL in homers, was in the top 10 in average and just missed the top 10 in RBI.

In 1950, Bob was back in the WL with Pueblo and the Wichita Indians. He hit .316/~.415/.517 with 88 RBI in 105 games. Wakefield played all of 1951 with Wichita and hit .269 with 6 HR and 51 RBI. Splitting 1952 between Wichita and the Denver Bears, Wakefield batted .294/~.388/.410, scored 90 runs, drove in 91 and had 17 outfield assists. For the 1953 Bears, Bob hit .265/~.386/.459 to wrap up his career.
