Biogrpahical Information[edit]

Bob Engel was an umpire in the Sooner State League (1956), California League (1957-1961), and Pacific Coast League (1962-1965). He was then a National League umpire from August of 1965 until 1990. During that time, he worked the World Series in 1972, 1979, and 1985.

In April 1990, Engel was caught shoplifing 4,000 baseball cards from a Costco in Bakersfield, CA [1]. That ended his umpiring career.

He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War. Following his death in 2018, major league umpires wore a patch with his initials, BE, in his honor.
