Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman William Schumaker played in the minor leagues from 1908 to 1915, in 1920, and from 1922 to 1924. He had a few seasons of note. In 1909, with the Fayetteville Highlanders, he led the Eastern Carolina League with a .340 average. In 1911, with the Winston-Salem Twins, Schumaker hit .330 with 11 home runs and 11 triples in 111 games, leading the Carolina Association with 145 hits and 91 RBI. In 1912, he led the league in hits (125), RBI (106), home runs (16) and runs scored (73). In 1913, he paced the North Carolina State League with 130 hits and 18 home runs. In 1920, again with the Twins, he hit .444 with 91 hits and 44 runs in 205 at-bats over 51 games.

In 1920, he began as the Twins manager, being replaced by Eddie Brennan partway through the year. In 1922, he managed the Johnson City Soldiers to a 60-61, 4th place finish. In 1923, he led the Cynthiana Cobblers to a 54-43 1st place finish and a league championship. He began as the Cobblers' skipper in 1924, but was replaced by John Koval partway through the year.
