Bill Murphy debuted in the majors in 2007.
He graduated from Arlington High School in Riverside, CA in 1999. After high school, he attended Cal State-Northridge for 3 years and was selected by the Oakland A's in the 2002 amateur draft during the third round (98th overall). Murphy was signed by scout Rick Magnante in June of 2002. By July 2004 (just over two years later), he had been traded from the A's to the Florida Marlins, from the Marlins to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and from the Dodgers to the Arizona Diamondbacks,
His Major League debut was with the Diamondbacks on September 3, 2007. He was selected off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Diamondbacks on March 17, 2008. Murphy then spent most of the entire 2008 season with the Jays' Syracuse Chiefs farm team. For 2008, he was 5-10 with a 5.73 ERA as a starter. He also went 3-0 with two saves out of the bullpen, with a 1.84 ERA.
Murphy became a pitching coach with the Greeneville Astros in 2016, Tri-City ValleyCats in 2017, and Corpus Christi Hooks in 2018. In 2021, he was named assistant pitching coach of the Houston Astros.
