William P. Leitz
- Born November 17, 1906
- Died December 30, 1989
Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman Bill Leitz played in the minor leagues from 1936 to 1940. His first season was perhaps his best--in 141 games for the Jacksonville Tars, he hit .296 with 29 doubles and 15 triples. He tied for 4th in the South Atlantic League in triples and was 5th in doubles (between Enos Slaughter and Nick Etten).
In 1937, he fell to .259/?/.329 for Jacksonville with 20 doubles and 7 triples; he was 0-1 as a pitcher as well. The next year, Leitz played for the Jackson Senators (8 for 34, 2 2B, 2 3B) and Palatka Azaleas (.292/.387/.403). He led the Florida State League with 13 times hit by pitch. Leitz's offensive production vanished with Palatka in 1939 (.189 AVG, .243 SLG) and he was used more frequently as a pitcher (3-6, 4.00). He also managed for part of the year. He ended his career with the 1940 Ocala Yearlings, seeing little action.
He umpired in the minor leagues following his playing career.
