Biographical Information

Bill Kerksieck pitched in 23 games for the hapless Philadelphia Phillies of 1939, who went 45-106 under manager Doc Prothro. The team ERA was 5.17, and only one of the starters had an ERA better than 4.85. Of the most frequently used relievers, Boom-Boom Beck had the lowest ERA, with a 4.73.

Kerksieck's biggest problem was home runs as he gave up 13 in 62 innings. Two other pitchers gave up more, but they pitched far more innings. Of the 13 home runs, Kerksieck gave up 6 of them on one day, August 13th, pitching against the New York Giants. He was remembered years later when Vicente Padilla, another Phillies pitcher, gave up 5 home runs to the New York Mets.

He had been purchased from the Boston Red Sox organization, and after the season was sold to Atlanta.
