Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Higgins had a long career in organized ball, coming to the majors with the Boston Beaneaters for 14 games in 1888, the St. Louis Browns for 67 games in 1890 and the Syracuse Stars for one game, also in 1890. He was not much of a hitter in either the big leagues or the minors, so presumably his defensive work at second base was esteemed.
Most of his big league games were with the Browns in 1890, who finished third in the American Association with a record of 77-58. Higgins is listed as the regular second baseman on the Browns, who had five managers. Bill hit .252 without power on a team which overall hit .273.
In addition to his playing career, Bill Higgins umpired one game in the American Association in 1890.
