Biographical Information

Right-hander Bill Ayers spent thirteen active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1954. He pitched his first game in the majors on April 17, 1947, and his last on July 13th of that year for the New York Giants. He finished with an 0-3 record in 13 games. Ayers had a long minor league career interrupted by World War II, when he served in Europe with the United States Army. He went 19-9 in 1942, 15-8 in 1943, and then was away from 1944 and 1945. In 1946, he came back to win 21 games. Later, in 1951, he won 20 again.

After baseball, Ayers was a route mail clerk for the United States Postal Service. He died from a heart attack while golfing on September 24, 1980 in Newnan, GA. He was inducted posthumously into the Coweta County (GA) Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
