Biographical information[edit]

Catcher Ben Phillips spent six years in the minor leagues, playing from 1941 to 1942, from 1946 to 1948 and in 1950.

He began his career with the Class-D Paducah Indians in 1941, hitting .259 with eight home runs in 104 games. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies system for 1942, hitting .259 with five home runs in 93 games for the Class-C Rome Colonels. He missed 1943 to 1945 due to World War II.

Returning to the Phillies organization in 1946, Phillips played for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in his first season back. In 1947, he played for the unaffiliated Bryan Bombers and Sherman-Denison Twins, hitting a combined .272 with four home runs and 33 doubles in 130 games. In 1948, he played for the San Angelo Colts and for Sherman Denison, posting a combined batting average of .243 with a .298 slugging percentage in 91 games.

In 1950, as player-manager of the Class-C Galveston White Caps, Phillips hit .272 with 31 doubles in 133 games. As manager, he led the team to a 80-68 record, good for second in the Gulf Coast League. The team made the playoffs, but lost in the first round.
