Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Ben Grzybek was drafted in the first round, 18th overall, of the 1976 amateur draft by the Kansas City Royals. He was taken one pick ahead of catcher Mike Scioscia and a few slots ahead of pitcher Bruce Hurst.

He played in the minor leagues until 1980. In just his second professional year, 1977, he was 9-14 with a 3.44 ERA in 26 starts -- completing 15 of them -- between the Daytona Beach Islanders and Jacksonville Suns. Back with Jacksonville in 1978, he was 8-8 with a 2.64 ERA in 21 starts. After a down year in 1979 (1-9, 5.88 ERA) and a mediocre 1980 (8-9, 4.21 ERA), he was out of pro baseball.

Overall, he went 28-41 with a 3.87 ERA in 92 games (86 starts).
