Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ben Casparius was a winner in his major league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 31, 2024. He pitched a scoreless 8th inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks with the score tied at 6 and inherited the win when the Dodgers scored twice in the top of the 9th. Evan Phillips then came in to record the save.
Casparius was drafted by the Dodgers out of the University of Connecticut in the 5th round of the 2021 amateur draft. That seems pretty straightforward for a native of Connecticut, but he had in fact started his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina where he was a two-way player and more of a utility player than a top pitching prospect. He did play in the 2018 College World Series as a freshman, however. It was only in 2021, after transferring to UConn, that he began to concentrate full-time on pitching. He went 8-5, 4.03 in his only season with the Huskies.
His first couple of full seasons in the Dodgers' organization were only so-so as he put up ERAs of 5.22 and 5.27 in 2022 and 2023 respectively, but still managed to rise to AA within that time frame. He was much better in 2024, as he went 6-4, 3.31 in 19 games with 98 strikeouts in 81 2/3 innings before getting the call to Los Angeles.
Notable Achievements[edit]
- Won one World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024
